Brief Guillermo del Toro interview on Pacific Rim!

USAToday has just released a new interview with Guillermo del Toro dealing with his upcoming giant Monster film.

"I grew up with a steady kaiju diet," the director recalls.

There's more than just that anomaly in the future world of Pacific Rim, del Toro says. "It's really creating a world that's been shaped by two anomalies: the giant monsters and the giant robots we create to fight them."

Del Toro put a spin on the humans and their robots, called Jaegers, that reflects Westerns as a key inspiration.

Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and other Jaeger pilots are deemed "riders," and when they move in the suits to put their machines in motion, "we made it a point to put the sound of spurs like a cowboy," del Toro says.

The Jaeger station is "basically the Alamo," del Toro says, and there are rangers and marshals within it — most notably Marshal Stacker Pentecost, a spiritual, moral leader played by Idris Elba. "He's not playing second banana. He's at the center of the conflict. He's the only guy who cannot give up."

The director likens the faceoffs between Jaegers and Kaiju to a pair of gunfighters in a duel — although the monsters come packing more than just a six-shooter. One of them shoots corrosive lava out of his mouth.

While it's sometimes hard to choose "because they are like my children," del Toro's favorite Kaiju outlaw is a massive, muscular, brawling battering ram of a creature he lovingly refers to as Leatherback.

"I find him very, very endearing. He has a big belly so I identify with him," del Toro says with a laugh. "He's no doubt my main man."

Del Toro is making sure the camera sees the true impact of the Kaiju attacks, even among fearful pedestrians. "We’re trying very, very hard to make the fight scenes in the movie very visceral, very much like you are there," he says. "It’s a very brutal series of battles we wage."

The Jaegers are controlled by two people connected through a neural bridge, and the fact that they have to work together to defeat a monster is a metaphor for the movie as a whole. "Once you’re in the robot you have to become one," del Toro says. "You have to put aside everything you hate or love about the other person and just work together or we will not survive. That was the idea, that leaning and relying on each other is what makes us stronger."

Raleigh, Mako and their fellow Kaiju-battling humans aren’t a fully funded army -- they're more a ragtag resistance. "No one believes in them anymore," del Toro says. "'Pacific Rim' is a movie designed to put movie fans in the middle of this grand battle and have characters that hopefully everybody can get a very good emotional grip on and enjoy the ride."

'Jurassic Park 4' Release Date?

This just in: Universal Pictures will release JURASSIC PARK 4 in 3D on June 13, 2014.

Is the much waited-for fourth chapter of the series really happening at last? Fingers crossed.

Bill Pullman on Indepencence Day Sequels

ComicBookMovie reports an update from Bill Pullman himself on the much waited-for Independence Day sequels. The actor stated: " [They might start shooting] within a year, yeah, something like that I guess. I worried about taking this part because it’s heating up".


Regarding the possible return of Will Smith, Bill said that "The Will Smith part of it may be ongoing but I think there's strategies for both. I like what I have to do in both of them. I'm not in an old age home in a wheelchair being wheeled out for one more moment. It's a very interesting conception of what happens to Whitmore between then and when it picks back up."


Pullman also does not "hold his breath" for the project due to its difficulty in development -- and possible fall into production hell. He himself defined it as 'plagued'.

Guillermo del Toro's 'At the Mountains of Madness' -- some new hope?

The last update the At the Mountains of Madness project got was around April of last year. Guillermo del Toro stated that Ridley Scott's Prometheus shared some plot points with Lovecraft's novella. He said on his forum boards: "Prometheus started filming a while ago- right at the time we were in preproduction on PACIFIC RIM. The title itself gave me pause- knowing that ALIEN was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and his novella. This time, decades later with the budget and place Ridley Scott occupied, I assumed the greek metaphor alluded at the creation aspects of the HPL book. I believe I am right and if so, as a fan, I am delighted to see a new RS science fiction film, but this will probably mark a long pause -if not the demise- of ATMOM."

The director had been following the project for over a decade, and seemed to renounce -- and not without a reason: John Carter, based on early 900s novels, was not very successful -- flopped, in fact -- due to comparisons with other more recent releases like Avatar. The same scenario could happen with At the Mountains of Madness -- and that was what Del Toro was concerned for.

Now, however, the song seems to change. The project was already obstacled by the budget it would require, combined with a R rating. Del Toro is now searching for studios interested in the film, and Tom Cruise is still allegedly attached to the project. FirstShowing.net reports the director as saying: "I'm going to try it one more time. Once more into the dark abyss. We're gonna do a big presentation of the project again at the start of the year and see if any [studio is] interested...Yeah, Tom is still attached. I think it would be so fantastic to make it with him. He's been such a great ally of the project."

Finally, regarding the alleged similarities between At the Mountains of Madness and Prometheus, Del Toro added: "I saw it finally and... yes, there are things in common, but, you know, screw it. Lovecraft was there first."
